SuBo in the land of the sumo

Published Date: 30 December 2009
HER voice has conquered Britain, smashed online sales records and created the fastest-selling debut album by a woman ever.
Yesterday Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle took another step towards world domination as she arrived in Japan ahead of her debut on the country's most prestigious New Year's Eve television event.

Ms Boyle posed for pictures but coyly refused to perform, saying her fans would have to wait until Thursday night.

The show, Kohaku Uta Gassen or the "Red and White Song Battle", is the country's prime vocal variety programme.

Flower of Scotland

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

0 Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.

Talent star Susan Boyle's debut album goes on sale in UK

Susan Boyle will appear on NBC's Today Show to promote her debut album

Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle's debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, is to be released later.

The recording has already become the biggest CD pre-order in the history of global online retailer Amazon.

The Scot is set to appear on America's premier breakfast TV programme, the Today Show, and is favourite to have the Christmas Number One album.

Boyle became a star after her April appearance on Britain's Got Talent. She eventually finished runner-up.

'Incredible achievement'

The 12-track album was named after the song from the musical Les Miserables that made her famous.

The record is a mix of pop covers such as You'll See by Madonna and The Monkees' Daydream Believer, as well as Christian stalwarts including Amazing Grace and Silent Night.

Bookmaker William Hill said it was so sure Boyle, from Blackburn, West Lothian, would achieve sales of one million by Christmas it would only offer an even money bet.

The album is hot favourite to be Christmas Number One

And the firm has installed her 6/4 favourite to have the Number One album at Christmas, ahead of stars such as Leona Lewis, Rihana and Take That.

After an appearance on Sunday night's X-Factor on ITV1, Boyle was set for a tour of the US, starting off in the NBC studios for the Today Show.

Amazon said Boyle's album was the biggest CD pre-order in the 14-year-history of its website.

Julian Monaghan, head of music buying at Amazon.co.uk, said: "Just eight months ago, no-one was aware of the talents of Susan Boyle.

"Now, she has generated more Amazon pre-order CD sales globally than any other artist.

"That is an incredible achievement and is testament to the fact that she has captured the hearts of people all over Britain, America and the rest of the world."

Steve Barnett, chairman of Boyle's record label, Columbia Records, part of Sony Music, said: "One of the things that is so unique about Susan Boyle is her ability to touch people around the world.

"We're excited that I Dreamed A Dream holds the new record for global pre-orders and that Amazon's customers have supported her album in this way."

New Susan Boyle album defies accepted consumer laws

September 15, 8:27 PMNewark Pop Culture ExaminerJeff Luppino-Esposito

Susan Boyle showing off her skills on Britain's Got Talent

When you find yourself acknowledging that Susan Boyle served up a solid cover of the Rolling Stones' classic 'Wild Horses' you know something is off. Yes, Boyle, the old woman in the shoe from Britain's Got Talent who, as Columbia records puts it ever so tersely, "was plucked from obscurity" after her show stopping performance of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. After you recover from your state of disarray, grooving along to Boyle's crooning vocals pouring out from your laptop speakers in some inappropriate location thanks to the power of wifi, you come to realize that you're not alone. And this-- this scares you.

In a Columbia records press release today, the label announced that pre-orders of Susan Boyle's new album 'I Dreamed a Dream' due out November 24 have "topped Jay-Z, Whitney Houston, and even The Beatles' remastered CDs, making Boyle #1 on the Amazon.com's best-sellers list."

This scares you even more.

But today we must not let our internal pretentious artist get the better of us and merely be disgusted by this apparent travesty. On the contrary now is the time to take a step back, pick up a wooden baseball bat, and shatter everything we ever thought was inherently true about consumer patterns.

Ostensibly the quantitative success of this album seems appropriate when considering the tens of millions of views that her Britain's Got Talent YouTube video has garnered, but then again, there is one key factor that doesn't make sense. Time.

Boyle's big debut occurred on April 11, 2009 -- yes, this is the longest 15 minutes of fame known to man. Most chalked up the uncontrollable outpouring of love for the affectionately nicknamed SuBo as a spur of the moment thing that follows the basic process of consumer thought-- 1.) 'look at that old ugly woman, she can't be talented!' 2.) 'wait, she is talented' 3.) 'bring on the pendulum effect!'

Yet at step 4 things go wrong. Of course, step 4 is 'realize that our love for this cultural phenomenon has been taken to an unreasonable extreme and go back to loving externally attractive/obviously talented people'. Somehow this has failed. The love continues to pour in as will the dollars.

Say what you will about the artistic integrity of Susan Boyle's upcoming album, say that it will be terrible, say that she is overrated, say that you still think she's just an unattractive old chick, but take that extra second and muse over the fact that your fellow man apparently disagrees. For an extended period of time.

Susan is a Goddess
By Beth Maxwell Boyle

What a joy to get a wee taste of the CD Susan Boyle will be releasing November 23, 2009. Susan Boyle's version of the Rolling Stones classic "Wild Horses" has been leaked as a teaser. It is remarkable and very fresh. The choice of it as a song for Susan Boyle to sing was brilliant. Her delivery is flawless. There is something sort of Kate Bush in her delivery. I am blown away. The piano accompaniment is dreamy. If this is truly a sign of what we have to expect from her upcoming album I Dreamed a Dream, it will be nothing short of monumental. Susan Boyle is expected to appear this week on US TV as part of the finale of America's Got Talent. OK I have only listened to it 10 times in a row!! Please go have a listen! I can't wait for this CD!

Wild Horses as Susan Sings it!

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't just let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild horses couldn't drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you've decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away

I know I dreampt you a sin and a lie
And I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Fate has been served and tears must be cried
So let's do some living after we die

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild horses, Couldn't drag me away
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwy.

The original Stones version was from the 1970 ‘Sticky Fingers’ album.

Susan Boyle's album tops Amazon bestsellers list... months before release

By Lizzie Smith
Last updated at 11:59 AM on 04th September 2009

Its the most hotly anticipated album release of the year.

And the success of Susan Boyle's first album is now beyond all doubt, after it topped Amazon's bestsellers list - nearly three months before release.

I Dreamed A dream does not even go on sale until November 23, but tens of thousands of copies have been sold to fans pre-ordering on the U.S. edition of Amazon.

Top of the charts: Susan Boyle has topped Amazon's bestseller list, three months before the release of her debut album

Hairy Angel: Susan's dowdy looks helped make her a star when she auditioned on Britain's Got Talent

The album is outselling Whitney Houston's comeback album, and a host of pre-release titles, including the Beatles remastered and the Twilight soundtrack.

A photoshoot for the cover of the album shows the Britain's Got Talent star looking happy and healthy.

Glowing Susan, whose unkempt appearance led to her being cruelly dubbed The Hairy Angel, sits in a scenic Scottish field, wearing a flattering purple dress.

She is pictured in the mountains of the Ardkinglas Estate in Cairndow, Argyll.

A photo from the shoot will be used on the album's cover.

Susan covers Madonna's 1995 hit You'll See on the album.

A source told The Sun: 'Susan chose it herself - it's a song she has loved for years.

'She sang it at auditions for TV shows and music contests when she used to be cruelly turned away by people.

'At the end, when she was sometimes reduced to tears, she used to say "You'll see".

'And she's proof she can do it now as one of the most famous women in the world.'

Susan Boyle gets a makeover by Harper's Bazaar !

'I feel like a movie star': Susan Boyle gets an incredible makeover by prestigious style bible Harper's Bazaar

By Lizzie Smith
Last updated at 1:09 AM on 07th August 2009

The word makeover just doesn't seem to do her justice.

Because Susan Boyle is a lady transformed. And while diehard fans may insist she was fine just as she was, something about her smile says she won't be going back to her old look.

The untamed eyebrows? Gone. The greying curls? Gone. The dowdy dresses? Gone.

What is left is a beautifully elegant 48-year-old woman clearly having the time of her life. Oh, and she can sing, too.

The prestigious style bible Harper's Bazaar - which is usually reserved for A-list actresses such as Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry - completely transformed the Scottish spinster for her first ever magazine photo shoot.

Gracing the pages of the publication is something a coup for the woman who had, until now, been dubbed the 'hairy angel' because of her frizzy tresses and bushy eyebrows.

A behind the scenes look at her shoot was broadcast on U.S. TV yesterday, showing a delighted Susan saying she 'felt like a movie star'.

Susan will feature in a large spread inside the September issue entitled Susan Boyle: Unsung Hero.

A smiling Susan said: 'It really made me feel like a Hollywood actress. Had my hair done up.'

Back in April, Amanda Holden dismissed the idea of Susan getting a new look.

'I won't let Simon Cowell take her to his dentist and I certainly won't let her near his hairdresser,' she said then.

'She needs to stay exactly as she is because that's the reason we love her. She just looks like anybody who could live on your street.

'The minute we turn her into a glamourpuss is when it's spoilt. For now we'll keep her exactly as she is because that's why we've all fallen in love with her.

'I think it's the underdog thing.'

But Susan, and the owner of her record label, Simon Cowell, must disagree.

Susan who has moved from her council house in Scotland to a West London flat, said her stint in the Priory in the aftermath of the show was a 'necessary thing'.

Now, she insisted, she was 'raring to go'.

A hairdresser, makeup artist and flattering lighting are credited with creating her spectacular new look. But the new confidence, it seems, is all her own.

Laura Brown, Harper's special projects editor, was interviewed on NBC's Today Show.

'The idea behind the shoot was a very, very simple one,' she said.

'It was to take gorgeous, glamorous and sensitive portraits of her. This was her first magazine photo shoot, so you can't do too much too soon.'

Susan became an overnight sensation when her audition for the show was put on YouTube, with hundreds of millions logging on to watch her sing.

'She came on to the stage and just transfixed us all,' said Brown.

'She's become a hero to a lot of people with dreams of stardom, or who maybe have a talent but have been too scared to express it.

'And I think everyone's heart soared when they saw her sing that day.

'I think Susan is getting more and more used to being in the spotlight and being on television and being photographed.

'Since April, you've seen her look just day to day become more polished and refined. And she's growing in her confidence with what she'll wear and how she'll be perceived.

'She actually did a little bit of moonwalking in her Giuseppe Zanotti heels at one point.

'What we did on our shoot was give her a little bit of a haircut, and that was it, and a little bit of a curl.

'And actually the shape of her hair is great. She's got a really lovely curl to it.

'So we just tidied it up a little bit and paired it with some natural makeup, and she looked great.'

Susan Boyle's statue in her hometown

Monday, July 27, 2009, 16:39

London, (ANI): Susan Boyle might be honoured with a statue in her hometown of Blackburn. The West Lothian Council is considering building a statue in honour of Susan Boyle, which could become an attraction for tourists flocking her hometown.

Buzz up!
Provost Tom Kerr is looking forward to meeting the 48-year-old singer to find a way to recognise her achievements, said a spokesman. The idea of a statue emerged after a New York couple visited the town and wrote a web diary of life in Boyle''s backyard. The diary entry detailed a 'heritage trail' of a Chinese takeaway, a chip shop, the hotel where she performed karaoke, and her council home.

"Susan is Scotland's wee Braveheart and I would love to set her in stone. I have in mind her face being part of a large globe of planet Earth rather than a life-size statuek,” the Scotsman quoted Brechin-based sculptor Tom Church, who crafted a statue of William Wallace in Stirling, as saying.

The town of Blackburn has gained massive interest on the Internet, thanks to the popularity of Susan Boyle's performances on ‘Britain's Got Talent’.

A council spokesman added: "Certainly the council would like to recognise Susan in some way in Blackburn as the interest shows no sign of stopping. I have just had a Japanese TV crew asking if it was possible to film in the town."

Susan Boyle does Moon River!

SUSAN BOYLE's first single will be her version of Moon River.
The Blackburn singer is reportedly halfway through recording her debut album and Moon River – which features in movie classic Breakfast at Tiffany's – is the best track so far.

Susan, 48, has said this week that sudden fame hit her like a "giant demolition ball".

She told US TV, in an interview that aired last night, that adjusting to her overnight celebrity has been difficult.

Her first appearance on Britain's Got Talent earlier this year had millions of YouTube hits. After coming second in the TV competition, the former church volunteer was hospitalised for exhaustion.

Susan Boyle: Sudden fame hit me like a demolition ball

Published Date: 21 July 2009
By ANGUS HOWARTH
SUSAN Boyle, the Scots singer who shot to worldwide attention with her appearance on Britain's Got Talent, has described the sudden fame as a "demolition ball".

In her first TV interview since she became a global sensation with millions of fans – set to be shown in the US tomorrow – Boyle, from Blackburn, West Lothian, said:

"The impact, like a demolition ball. You know, and anyone who has that kind of impact – finds it really hard to get a head around it.

"I've got to be honest here. I guess I had to get my head around it, but through the – the guidance of a great team, and they are very good, I was able to see that in perspective and really turn that around a little."

Boyle, 48, who initially struggled with her celebrity status, is working on an album, under the direction of Britain's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell. Boyle's rendition of I Dreamed a Dream, her first and most popular performance on the talent show, attracted 275 million video views on the web.

"Being plucked from obscurity is a bit like, you know, going on a long journey.

"You don't know what's going to happen. You don't know how it's going to end. I don't want it to end," she added.

Susan Boyle records her first track

Susan Boyle records her first track
Friday, July 3, 2009, 11:51 [IST]

London (ANI): Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle has recorded her first track, which has already been praised by the toughest critic on television Simon Cowell.

"I've cut one track with her and she sounds fantastic on record. She's so good, the album is not just going to be showtunes. We're going to take our time with this," the Sun quoted Cowell as saying. When Boyle had first appeared on Britain's Got Talent, she said that she aspired to become a musical theatre singer "as successful as" Elaine Paige.

The 48-year-old had performed a rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les MisƩrables in the first round of the third series of Britain's Got Talent, which was watched by over 10 million viewers when it aired on 11 April 2009.

Standing ovation for Boyle at Wembley gigs

Published Date: 22 June 2009
By BEVERLEY ROUSE
BRITAIN'S Got Talent star Susan Boyle received a standing ovation last night, when she performed live at Wembley Arena in London.
Boyle, 48, has missed several live dates, including two shows in Nottingham on Saturday, to take rest days due to the stress of being in the spotlight, but she returned to to perform at the two London shows as part of the talent show's tour.

The singer, from Blackburn, West Lothian, sang her semi-final tune, Memories, from the musical Cats, and I Dreamed A Dream, from the musical Les Miserables – the song that brought her worldwide fame.

A spokeswoman for the show said after Boyle's second Wembley appearance: "They were on their feet for her. It was a standing ovation."

Boyle became the focus of international attention after her powerful audition performance left the audience and judges open-mouthed with surprise.

Boyle was taken to the Priory Clinic in central London hours after losing in the final. One of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, said the church worker was emotionally drained and exhausted.

Susan Boyle given Glasgow ovation

Susan Boyle received a standing ovation when she sang at the Britain's Got Talent tour in Glasgow, a day after cancelling two concerts.

Her publicist said the singer received a "rapturous" reception from the audience at the city's SECC venue.

The singer from West Lothian had been advised to rest rather than perform at two shows in Manchester on Sunday.

Boyle had previously been treated for exhaustion after coming second in the ITV1 talent show.

Publicist Nicola Phillips said the crowd in Glasgow broke into applause halfway through her performance of Memory, from the musical Cats.

She also sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, the song that propelled her to international fame.

Boyle had performed both songs in Birmingham on Friday and sang during matinee and evening shows in Sheffield on Saturday.

But in the later concerts she appeared to stumble over the words to Memory and received a mixed reaction from the audience.

Concert-goers at the Manchester Evening News Arena arrived on Sunday to find notices announcing Boyle would not perform at either of the scheduled matinee or evening shows.

"She sends her sincere apologies to her fans for not appearing in Manchester," her spokesman said.

The crowd in Manchester booed after Britain's Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern told the audience Boyle would not be performing, before a video clip of her "journey" was played on stage.

Ticket holders had the option of a refund if they decided they did not want to watch the show - but a spokesman for the MEN arena said only seven people asked for their money back over the course of two shows.

The arena tour, which will travel across the UK until the end of June, showcases winning act Diversity plus some of the other finalists and semi-finalists, including Boyle.

Susan Boyle gets a standing ovation

Susan Boyle gets a standing ovation after wowing the crowd on the first night of Britain's Got Talent live tour

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:09 AM on 13th June 2009

Perhaps it was the absence of the judges or the fact she knew she had nothing to lose.

But when Susan Boyle stepped on to the stage for the Britain's Got Talent live tour in Birmingham on Friday, she showed none of the nervousness she had demonstrated in previous performances.

The Scottish spinster, who left The Priory just nine days ago after suffering from 'exhaustion', was given a standing ovation after performing two songs.

Miss Boyle got off to a faltering start, appearing to be slightly out of time during the first verse of Memory from Cats - the song she performed in the Britain's Got Talent semi-final.

But she soon seemed to get into her comfort zone, lapping up the crowd's cheers and looking a different person to the fragile individual who entered the Priory.

Wearing the same floor-length glittering dress she sported in the show's final, Miss Boyle reached her arms out to the audience and blew kisses during her performances of Memory and I Dreamed A Dream.

Before exiting the stage, the Scottish spinster replaced her trademark shimmy with a more dignified bow.

'Everyone was wondering how Susan was going to do,' one crowd member said.

'But she looked confident and her voice sounded amazing. She didn't look like someone who was in the Priory just a week ago.'

Touch and go as Boyle joins tour

Susan Boyle went on stage as part of the Britain's Got Talent live tour's first night in Birmingham - after a last minute decision.

She appeared during the second half of the show at the National Indoor Arena and blew a kiss to screaming fans.

The singer performed I Dreamed A Dream and Memory from the musicals Les Miserables and Cats respectively.

Doubts had persisted over the 48-year-old's fitness to perform after she became ill with exhaustion.

The singer was introduced to the stage by ITV2's Britain's Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern, who described Ms Boyle as being "famous all over the world."

He added: "She's so famous even her pet cat Pebbles is famous."

A tour spokeswoman only confirmed she would sing shortly before the show started.

There had been concerns about her health following her admission to the Priory clinic with exhaustion after she came second in the ITV1 contest.

Boyle's spokeswoman had earlier said it was the star's decision whether she would perform and that she was under no pressure to agree.

Her brother Gerry told the BBC she had been "showing signs of anxiety".

Overnight success

The singer, from West Lothian, shot to fame after surprising the show's judges with her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream in her first audition.

Since then the clip has been watched millions of times on the internet.

She has appeared on various US TV programmes, including Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

However, the pressure on the former church volunteer seemed to have taken its toll after she was admitted to the private clinic, where she stayed for five days.

The arena tour, which will travel across the UK until the end of June, showcases winning act Diversity plus the other nine finalists, including Boyle.

Pressures of instant fame

Broadway stars have advice for Susan Boyle
‘Just work hard and believe in yourself,’ says Constantine Maroulis

Access Hollywood
updated 1 hour, 44 minutes ago

Susan Boyle has already wowed Britain — along with the entire world via YouTube — but is the “Britain’s Got Talent” sensation ready for Broadway? Many of the 2009 Tony Awards attendees told Access Hollywood they’d love to see Boyle on the Great White Way.

“Oh, she’s fantastic,” Dolly Parton told Access on Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York. “She’d be great on Broadway. I want to meet her too.”

Broadway legend Liza Minnelli agreed, but warned of the possible pitfalls that can come with fame.

“Why not? I think she would be wonderful!” Minnelli exclaimed, “If she could stand the pressure. You know.”

Allison Janney, who stars in the Tony-nominated “9 to 5,” said Boyle will shine once the media firestorm surrounding her calms.

“She just needs to get all the heat off her from this craziness and settle down and get into her life again,” Janney told Access. “Take advantage of her, you know, newfound fame and do a musical or do things she never thought she’d be able to do. I’m happy for her.”

Constantine Maroulis, who nabbed a Tony nomination for “Rock of Ages,” advised Boyle to stay determined and to never forget who she is.

“Just work hard and believe in yourself. Not to sound too corny. She seems like a nice woman. And the right part for the right person,” Maroulis explained. “You never know. Things can work out.”

As for actress Gina Gershon, she told Access she’d imagined Boyle on a Broadway stage since the second she first laid eyes on her.

“When I saw her tape, the first thing I thought was put her on Broadway,” Gershon said, adding, “She just seems like she would have a blast and she seems to have the right voice and the right attitude for it. I would go see her!”
